Worldwide Holdings Berhad Leading the Green Revolution

In a remarkable stride towards environmental sustainability and energy innovation, Worldwide Holdings Berhad (WHB) is at the forefront of driving Waste-to-Energy (WTE) projects in Selangor, Malaysia. The company is currently spearheading the development of the largest and most advanced WTE facility in the country, marking a significant leap in the region’s waste management industry.

The cornerstone of WHB’s commitment to sustainable development lies in its ambitious plan to develop the Jeram Waste-to-Energy Project. This project will collectively process an impressive 3,000 tons per day (tpd) of solid waste at the company’s Integrated Solid Waste Management Center (ISWMC) in Jeram, generating about 50 MW of clean and renewable energy. Additionally, another WTE plant to be developed at the ‘Tanjung Dua Belas ISWMC’ in Kuala Langat will process an additional 1,800 tpd of solid waste, producing 38 MW of electricity.

One of the most remarkable aspects of WHB’s WTE initiative is its ability to effectively treat a wide spectrum of waste materials. This technology plays a pivotal role in addressing the unsorted waste problem, reducing the volume of solid waste by a staggering 90%. By implementing WTE solutions, Selangor is taking a significant step towards minimizing its environmental impact and overcoming waste management challenges.

Furthermore, WHB’s commitment to the environment extends to resolving the scarcity of land for landfills in Selangor. The WTE facilities significantly reduce the dependency on engineered landfill disposal methods, which require a larger environmental footprint and pose long-term risks. By transitioning to WTE, Selangor can conserve valuable land resources and ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.

The development of the ISWMCs by WHB marks a substantial contribution to supporting the Selangor state government’s sustainability agenda, aligning with the goals outlined in ‘Rancangan Selangor Pertama’ (RS-1). This aims to lead in sustainable development and safeguard a clean and robust environment for future generations. WHB’s investments in WTE facilities demonstrate a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a circular economy, where waste is transformed into valuable resources.

WHB Group CEO Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria Scaled E1695283013504“With these WTE projects in the pipeline in Selangor, we are set to further strengthen our position as a national champion in waste management, aligning with the nation’s move towards achieving zero-waste status,” said WHB Group CEO, Datin Paduka Norazlina Zakaria.

WHB’s WTE projects are not just a testament to its dedication to environmental sustainability but also to its forward-thinking approach towards energy production. By harnessing the potential of waste as a resource, Selangor is not only addressing its waste management challenges but also contributing to its energy needs in an eco-friendly manner. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels and mitigates the environmental impacts associated with their extraction and consumption.

Looking ahead, WHB is poised to make even greater strides in the field of WTE. The company plans to develop several more WTE plants over the next decade, further solidifying its commitment to transforming waste into clean energy and supporting Selangor’s journey towards a more sustainable future. As WHB continues to innovate and expand its WTE portfolio, it is clear that the company’s vision goes beyond mere waste management; it is a vision of a cleaner, greener, and more energy-efficient Selangor for generations to come.

Malaysia’s dance with FAANG Giants

960x0In Malaysia’s bustling capital city of Kuala Lumpur, and other urban areas across the country, anticipation surrounds discussions about the global tech phenomenon known as FAANG [Facebook (now Meta Platforms), Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google [now Alphabet]).Entrepreneurs, industry experts, and policymakers are engaged in conversations about the implications of welcoming these giants onto the nation’s digital landscape. With its rapidly growing tech-savvy population, Malaysia is at crossroads that could redefine its economic trajectory and cultural identity.

THE FAANG INVASION Facebook’s (Meta Platforms) Impact:
With a population exceeding 32 million and a steadily growing middle class, Malaysia holds promise as an attractive market for FAANG companies. The allure of Meta Platforms’ social connectivity has already drawn over 25 million monthly active Facebook users in the country, showcasing the extent to which the platform is embedded in the fabric of Malaysian society. Under the Meta Platforms umbrella also includes Instagram and WhatsApp – all of which are widely used as modes of communication in this country. Friends, families and communities are also using these platforms as tools for information sharing and social engagement, ultimately transcending geographical boundaries.

Apple’s Tech Status Symbol:
Apple’s reputation for innovation and product quality has positioned itself as a status symbol among
Malaysians. The growing popularity of iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks is indicative of a broader technological shift. Young professionals, entrepreneurs, and students are adopting these devices as essential tools for communication, productivity, and entertainment, sparking a transformation in how Malaysiansinteract with technology.

Amazon’s Retail Revolution:
Amazon’s global e-commerce dominance has the potential to revolutionise Malaysia’s retail landscape. As traditional brickand-mortar stores face disruptions, the prospect of tapping into Amazon’s extensive product range and streamlined delivery services piques the interest of local businesses. The ease of reaching a wider customer base and venturing into international markets fuels ambitions for growth, though concerns linger about the impact on local retailers and traditional markets.

Netflix’s Cultural Reshaping:
Netflix’s streaming platform has caused a seismic shift in Malaysia’s entertainment consumption habits. Its library of diverse international and local content caters to the varying tastes and preferences of Malaysians. The surge in subscribers demonstrates a growing appetite for high-quality entertainment on demand. As local filmmakers and content creators find their work on this global platform, cultural narratives are reaching wider audiences, reshaping perceptions of Malaysia’s creative industries.

Google’s (Alphabet) Information Gateway:
Google (under the parent company Alphabet), the search engine giant, has woven itself into the fabric of Malaysians’ daily lives. With over 30 million Google searches conducted daily, the platform becomes a virtual gateway to information, education, and research. From students seeking academic resources to entrepreneurs researching market trends, Google’s impact on knowledge dissemination is undeniable.

THE COMPLEX BALANCING ACT
As discussions buzz with excitement about the potential benefits, cautionary voices also emerge. The concentration of power within a few tech giants raises concerns about stifled competition and limited innovation. The delicate balance between global technological influence and the preservation of Malaysia’s cultural identity is at the forefront of many minds. Data privacy and security emerge as paramount concerns as Malaysians integrate FAANG services into their daily lives. The digitisation of personal information has implications for individual privacy, warranting a closer examination of data protection frameworks and regulations. As the convenience of seamless connectivity collides with the necessity of safeguarding sensitive information, policymakers grapple with the imperative of ensuring citizens’ digital rights.

Haan1 E1695276340741
Hann Liew, Founder & CEO of Halogen Capital

Amid these considerations, experts and industry leaders begin contemplating a harmonious coexistence between FAANG companies and local innovation. The narrative shifts from fearing dominance to exploring collaboration. Initiatives are proposed to bridge the gap between tech giants and local startups, aiming to provide resources, mentorship, and funding to nurture homegrown talents. These efforts envision a scenario in which Malaysia can leverage FAANG’s global influence while preserving
its distinctive cultural heritage. “Perhaps the phrase FAANG will resonate most with Malaysia’s savvy investment community, where both long term (10 years, 25% annualised return) and shorter term (35% return in the past year) equity investors have enjoyed outsized returns from their investment portfolios in these five stocks,” explains Hann Liew, founder and CEO of Halogen Capital, Malaysia’s first fund manager licensed to manage cryptoassets.

He further emphasised that how investors will navigate these (now) mega stocks as part of their portfolios going forward will be determined by how they will dance with local governments by way of
censorship and how they respond to the next wave of technologies and business models (artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT etc).

EDUCATIONAL PREPAREDNESS
The tech landscape in Malaysia is undergoing a transformation, driven by the potential of FAANG’s presence. The narrative of collaboration between these global tech giants and local startups is gaining momentum. As policymakers seek to strike the right balance, questions arise about the role of education in preparing the workforce for this digital era. Academia and vocational training are seen as critical to equipping Malaysians with the skills necessary to thrive in an environment increasingly defined by technology.

Furthermore, the impact of FAANG’s presence extends beyond economics and culture. It reverberates within the realm of policymaking, where debates center on fostering innovation and ensuring regulatory frameworks adapt to the digital age. The government’s role in supporting homegrown start-ups, incentivising entrepreneurship, and creating an environment conducive to technology-based innovation is being scrutinised and reshaped.

AN EVOLVING NARRATIVE
As the journey of Malaysia into the realm of FAANG continues, the nation is writing a new chapter in its history. The ongoing discourse reflects a dynamic exchange between global technological influence and the preservation of Malaysia’s unique identity. As Malaysians navigate the potential and challenges presented by the presence of FAANG, they demonstrate their adaptability and resilience in an increasingly interconnected world.

“It’s amazing to observe how quickly FAANG companies have incorporated into our daily lives, providing Malaysians, especially newcomers and those without significant income and investment experience, with
enormous investment opportunity. You don’t need a large sum of money to invest; you can buy fractional shares of these titans. Consider it as acquiring a portion of these technological behemoths,” says Sajesh Kumar Paramasivam, senior partner at TorchBearer Consulting, a wealth management company specialising in family wealth building.

A REAL-TIME STORY
The story of Malaysia and FAANG is not a mere work of fiction but an evolving narrative, influenced by real-time decisions, aspirations, and creativity. At the end of 2022, Facebook’s user base has grown to over 26 million monthly active users, further embedding its impact on society. Amazon’s market share in e-commerce has surged, reshaping local retail dynamics. Netflix’s Malaysian subscriber base has expanded, elevating Malaysian creative content on a global stage. Apple continues to inspire technological aspirations, and Google remains Malaysians’ trusted source of information.

Malaysia’s journey stands as a testament to the nation’s pursuit of progress while honouring its rich heritage. The evolving partnership with FAANG companies showcases the nation’s ability to navigate the complexities of the digital era while preserving its cultural roots.

ESG Evolution: COP27 to Carbon Stocks Insights

In an era defined by mounting environmental concerns, social responsibility, and ethical governance, the rise of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles has been nothing short of transformative. As the world grapples with the urgent need to address climate change and promote sustainable practices, ESG has emerged as a critical framework guiding both businesses and governments towards a greener and more equitable future.

THE GENESIS OF ESG: PAVING THE PATH TO COP27
The inception of ESG can be traced back to the mounting awareness about the consequences of unchecked environmental degradation and social inequality. ESG’s roots lie in the early sustainability movements that championed the need for responsible business practices, community engagement, and ethical corporate governance. At COP27, the trajectory reached a significant milestone, where nations congregated to address the accelerating climate crisis. COP27 heralded a renewed commitment to curbing greenhouse gas emissions, with a growing emphasis on collaborative global eff orts. This conference placed ESG’s relevance on the international stage, with environmental stewardship, social equity, and transparent governance at the forefront of policy discussions.

ESG INTEGRATION IN MALAYSIAN BUSINESSES
ESG’s imprint extends far beyond policy considerations, effectively permeating and reshaping the
entire business landscape in Malaysia. Companies of all scales, ranging from industry giants to small enterprises, have astutely recognised that embracing and integrating ESG practices goes beyond aligning with global imperatives—it becomes a strategic decision that significantly influences
brand reputation, financial performance, and long-term sustainability.

In a study conducted by the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation, it was revealed that businesses that prioritise ESG principles tend to outperform their peers in terms of financial performance. Notably, companies that demonstrated robust environmental and social practices experienced an average of 25% higher return on equity (ROE) compared to their counterparts who did not prioritise ESG considerations.

Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Malaysia Business Ethics Institute (MBEI) disclosed that over 80% of consumers in Malaysia consider a company’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility when making purchasing decisions. This consumer sentiment highlights the pivotal role ESG plays in shaping brand perception and influencing consumer choices.

Large corporations in Malaysia, such as Petronas, have proactively integrated ESG into their business strategies. Petronas’ initiatives to reduce carbon emissions through energy-efficient practices not only contribute to environmental goals but have also resulted in significant cost savings. The company’s investments in renewable energy and sustainable technology have not only earned it recognition as a responsible corporate citizen but have also attracted eco-conscious investors.

In the realm of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), a survey by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA) unveiled that over 70% of SMEs are actively seeking to enhance energy efficiency and adopt cleaner technologies. These efforts not only reduce the carbon footprint but also position SMEs as forward-thinking entities aligned with global sustainability trends.

The Malaysian government’s efforts to incentivise ESG practices have also bolstered the integration of these principles. The introduction of tax incentives and grants for businesses engaged in eco-friendly
initiatives has garnered increased interest and engagement from the corporate sector. This intersection of government support and business initiative demonstrates the growing recognition of ESG’s impact on
long-term profitability.

In essence, ESG integration in Malaysia transcends being a superficial trend, resonating deeply with both consumer preferences and financial realities. The data and statistics outlined above indicate that companies embracing ESG practices are not only meeting global ethical standards but are also carving a competitive edge in the market. As businesses continue to navigate an ever-evolving landscape, the significance of ESG in enhancing brand reputation, financial performance, and overall sustainability becomes irrefutable.

Carbon stocks could prove a valuable addition to an investor’s portfolio as the world heads towards net-zero targets.

ANTICIPATING COP28 AND BEYOND: A SUSTAINABLE TRAJECTORY
As COP28 approaches, the world is poised to build upon the achievements of COP27. The momentum created by ESG initiatives, including the rise of carbon stocks, will likely shape discussions and actions at COP28. The success of these endeavours hinges on the concerted efforts of governments, businesses, and individuals to embrace ESG as an integral part of their strategies.

The evolution of ESG from a concept to a driving force shaping sustainability and responsible governance is painting a promising picture of a world that acknowledges its responsibilities. With that, it is also taking proactive steps towards a greener, more equitable future.

Mohamed Sabri Ramli, Chief Executive Officer of Takaful Malaysia Am, the general takaful arm of Takaful Malaysia, said, “Corresponding to the spirit of takaful, which is lending a helping to those in need, the baking facilities we provide for the youth shelter, Raudhatus Sakinah, is a commendable initiative that provides practical skills by encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship among the shelter’s residents. Baking can empower the shelter residents by giving them the tools and knowledge which foster self-sufficiency and independence and the opportunity to learn a skill useful for future employment. We work closely with the management of Raudhatus Sakinah to determine their specific needs for baking facilities, and the residents learn how to bake and sell baked goods to generate income, which helps support the shelter’s daily operations.”

Through the CSR program, Takaful Malaysia provides complete baking facilities and equipment to Raudhatus Sakinah, a shelter and rehabilitation centre in Selangor for female Muslim teenagers in crisis situations. The baking facility gives the residents access to appropriate baking resources, develop life skills and self-sustaining, and work toward a more secure and independent future.

“We ensure that the baking facilities adhere to safety regulations, including proper food handling, hygiene, and supervision by the shelter’s management. We are pleased that this initiative encourages the residents’ creativity and exploration in baking. Raudhatus Sakinah has received an overwhelming response and baked goods orders from various parties, and we are delighted to receive positive outcomes from this initiative.

This program reflects our unwavering commitment to positively impacting the community by reaching out to those in need and fulfilling our responsibility to eligible Asnaf (tithe) recipients, which aligns with our value as a responsible and caring Islamic financial institution. It is about the impact we create, the difference we make in the lives of individuals and communities, and the legacy we leave for future generations. With this in mind, we have embarked on a journey to strengthen our community-based efforts and drive meaningful change for a lasting legacy of positivity,” said Mohamed Sabri Ramli.
